Ask for a record showing which installed systems were checked, under what conditions and with what result. A pile of manuals does not tell you whether the cabin’s controls and services were demonstrated together.
Agree the scope with the installers
List heating, ventilation, hot water, water supply, alarms and any off-grid equipment. Ask each installer which checks apply, who performs them and what evidence will be handed over. Required tests and certificates depend on the system and jurisdiction.
| Record | Information to request |
|---|---|
| Equipment identity | Exact installed model and serial details |
| Test or check | Method, date, responsible person and result |
| Settings | Agreed normal mode and protected settings |
| Demonstration | What the owner was shown |
| Unresolved item | Limitation, follow-up action and responsible person |
Demonstrate normal use
Ask to see the normal controls, isolation points and user maintenance tasks. Where relevant, ask the installer to explain behavior after a power or internet interruption using an appropriate demonstration. Do not improvise fault tests or disable safety systems yourself.
For ventilation, request the system-specific airflow and balancing records where applicable. For water heating, confirm the agreed operating instructions and service access. Keep technical settings out of a casual guest control guide.
Keep seasonal limitations explicit
A summer handover may not demonstrate every winter operating condition. Record what has and has not been verified and arrange appropriate follow-up. Avoid signing a blanket claim that every seasonal performance issue has been tested when it has not.
The handover document guide covers the wider folder. Use the cold-climate heat-pump data guide for equipment selection questions and the project checklist to follow unresolved commissioning work through to completion.
