Read the tariff rather than assuming peak hours
The US Energy Information Administration explains that some utilities offer time-of-day pricing. The hours and prices are specific to your plan, so a national average or a neighbour's bill cannot establish your charge.
Record the effective date, energy rates, fixed charges and any other relevant components. Ask the utility to explain unfamiliar demand or minimum-bill provisions before building a forecast.
A worked energy-charge example
Imagine a day with 6 kWh used during an invented $0.40/kWh period and 10 kWh during an invented $0.15/kWh period:

These rates are invented and exclude fixed charges, tax, export credits and demand charges. They demonstrate the method, not a current offer.
Choose loads that can move appropriately
Use actual appliance instructions and household needs. Do not delay essential freeze protection, ventilation or safety functions merely to reach a cheaper period. A scheduled task must still be safe and suitable when the cabin is empty.
Check whether your arrival routine concentrates heating, hot water and cooking in one period. Compare interval data from a representative occupied weekend with data from an empty week.
Keep the calculator's boundary clear
The energy cost calculator applies one entered tariff to a scenario. Run a separate calculation for each period and sum them. It does not automatically read your utility plan.
